Fishing Locations
A typical day of shark fishing begins early; before 6:00 a.m. The sun is usually just coming up as we head out past the mouth of the harbour. It is a peaceful way to wake up to what promises to be a very exciting day. We will head for one of a few of my favorite fishing areas and once on site, take a few minutes to get the bait and gear ready to go.

"FISH ON!" When you hear those words, the scramble begins. Who wants to fight this one? It could be just a little one, or it could be the fight of the day - you just never know.

Fighting a shark can take anywhere from 10 minutes, to 5 hours, depending on the size. After a respectable amount of time has passed, even the strongest man will, at times, hand over the rod to his buddy as their arms can feel like jello. My policy is that I personally never fight the shark. It is your dime, and your fishing time. Do you think you have the stamina?
Types of Fish
Shark in Atlantic Canada, you ask? You betcha! Blue Shark, porbeagle, and even mako are caught every year in these parts. Although Blues are most common, the occasional porbeagle and mako enter our waters as the temperature becomes warmer, and I can attest to the fact that these shark are a handful! They range in size from a respectable 70 lbs, to 1000 lbs plus, and promise a fishing adventure like you've never had before!

Once our chum slick begins, we are set. While we wait for 'the big ones', we bide our time with a little ground fishing. Cod, Haddock, Halibut and Red Fish are typical catches. (Halibut must be released due to the commercial fishery).

Fly fishing for shark is an incredible thrill for the experienced fly angler. Fly fishing for shark is performed by a method of 'sight casting'. Once the chum slick has attracted the shark, a line is cast carefully into its line of sight. This can be very exciting as you watch the fin slicing through the water, and anticipate the strike. And of course it is truly amazing to watch a fly rod bent WAY over, testing its every fiber (and yours, too!)

Please visit our website to continue the excitment.

Tagging
What originally began as an aside for Blue Shark Fishing Charters has become an essential part of the way we operate. Tagging is very important for the study and research into shark populations and behaviors.

We currently tag shark for the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, and the APEX Predator Program. We have also participated in project work conducted by Dalhousie University, such as a recent satellite tagging project for Blue Shark.

Personally, I have come to learn that the thrill of simply attracting and catching shark is sufficient sport, and that killing shark really serves no purpose. These are my personal views and this is the way I choose to operate my business.

Catching, measuring, dehooking, tagging, and releasing shark is certainly a hands-on experience and one which my clients find extremely exciting and satifying.

About Us
You might say Captain Art Gaetan is an 'old salt', having spent most of his life on the water. As a young boy, he fished extensively with his father, a lobster fisherman from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. At the tender age of seventeen, Art joined the Canadian Navy, retiring after twenty years of service. Art has fished fresh and salt water species all over the world and is quick to say: "Atlantic Canada offers some of the most exciting saltwater fishing in the world and is arguably the best kept secret for the serious global angler." Art is Department of Transportation certified, and qualified in Marine Safety and CPR. He is currently a field tester for Shimano Canada's Saltwater Equipment Division.
